A Whole New Kind of Happy Hour

I love brunch. Especially after waking up with a hangover and craving something greasy and delicious to help you feel like a human being again. So there's nothing more disappointing than getting up so late that you miss brunch. Well someone has finally come to their senses with soon to open Permanent Brunch. According to Eater, the East Village restaurant’s menu will consist of all brunch items. But the best part is they will have an artisanal bacon bar! Now it can be happy hour every hour...

Thanks Karen!

Big Gay Bacon Ice Cream

The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck is coming your way! Serious Eats reports that the latest fancy food truck will be serving up rainbow sprinkle-topped treats to the West Village during the day and the East Village and Chelsea at night. Other toppings include Olive Oil & Sea Salt, Nutella, and... Bacon! If you show up at the truck window sporting BGICT gear, you’ll be offered a delicious discount! Got to love the “husband beater.” Find out where the truck will be on twitter. Summer has me obsessing over bacon ice cream—I’m also following the General Greene cart. Just hoping and waiting for Elvis to make an appearance...

Support Pork Week

With the fear of Swine Flu spreading about, one NY TImes blogger has declared this week their own personal Support Pork Week. I urge you to do the same as American pork is being banned in other countries leaving many hog farmers worried about sales. I’m doing my part—I ordered pulled pork for lunch today over my usual favorite meatball dish. Some other fun ways to support pork:

Show your pig love without getting pig flu. Via inlovewiththerisk.

Sip a Bakon Vodka cocktail from this snout cup. Via what-ever-the-weather.

Or stop by Joe Doe in the East Village for a “Conflicted Jew.”

A Bacon Filled Weekend

Friday night I had dinner at the Redhead in the East Village. I've heard good things about the food but really... I went for the bacon peanut brittle. It has a spiciness that overpowers the bacon flavor but overall I still say it's a great combination. Every thing’s better with bacon, right? Including the bacon cheese burger I ordered.

Several hours and several bars later, I ended up at the Double Down Saloon for their infamous bacon martini which did in fact come with a slim jim stirrer. Although I very much enjoyed it, I believe this was the drink that did me in. I don’t quite recall the rest of the night...

With a massive hang over, I woke up Saturday afternoon and made my way over to The Farm on Adderly. Not even a huge side of bacon could get me out of my zombie-like state (damn you, Double Down!). What better way to deal with a bacon martini hang over than with more and more bacon? After a nice walk from Ditmas Park to Windsor Terrace, I stopped in at Hot Diggity Dog for a bacon and cheese dog. Finally I felt somewhat human again. Thanks to Lieh for taking the hot dog pics and for putting up with my pamphagous appetite for bacon!

Sunday should have been my day to rest but there was the Great Greenpoint Mac-Off which I was sure would involve bacon at some point. Unfortunately the 1st of 4 places ran out of their mac & cheese with bacon and the rest didn't include bacon. Stupid Greenpoint...
Still hungry and disappointed, I headed over to the Smoke Joint in Fort Greene for something to satisfy my pork craving. There was no bacon here but I have never, ever had a hot dog as amazing as their black angus dog topped with pulled pork. Last month I had high hopes for the bacon wrapped, deep fried Chang Dog at PDT. What a let down... but the bacon was not a fault—Crif Dogs are really awful! Guess bacon doesn’t make everything better.

I ♥ Pork Belly

As much as I love thin, crispy, traditional bacon I will occasionally indulge in it's thicker, fattier cousin. After all, fat = flavor!

A few weeks ago I had a porchetta plate at Porchetta (of course!) in the East Village. The heavily seasoned pork loin wrapped in pork belly was worth the cold walk over to Ave A. I also enjoyed a side of roasted potatoes with “burnt ends” which is basically chunks of crunchy, delicious pork skin. Mmmm...

Last night I had dinner at the izakaya restaurant Riki near Grand Central. Along with lots of other yummy Japanese small dishes, I ordered pork belly skewers. It was like thick bacon on a stick! Very similar to Korean bacon but I think I may have liked this even better.

Please Don’t Wait

Last month I went to Please Don’t Tell to try their bacon-infused Benton’s Old Fashioned. I may have mentioned that reservations are hard to come by. A seat at the bar can be over an hour wait (although they will call your cell phone while you hang out in the neighborhood). My suggestion—make your own:

I’m telling...

I enjoy bacon. I enjoy bourbon. So when I heard of a bacon-infused bourbon, I was very eager to make a reservation at PDT (Please Don't Tell) to try their Benton's Old Fashioned. PDT is a speakeasy style bar accessed through a phone booth inside Crif Dogs in the East Village. Unfortunately, I could not get a reservation and we had to wait about an hour for seats at the bar. It was well worth the wait. Although I didn't get a strong sense of bacon-ness from the drink it was still a very well-made, tasty cocktail in a pleasant and uncrowded atmosphere. A good reason to go back: the PDT specialty dogs menu. More specifically, the Chang dog—a bacon wrapped, deep fried Crif dog topped with Momofuku kimchi. I'll make reservations in advance next time...

Pig Candy

I've always been a big fan of sweet and savory, but I'm not quite sure about this...

I bought Mo's Bacon Bar as a gift for a fellow baconista's holiday party this weekend. I intend to sample and report back. You can also purchase the pig-shaped version at the Vosges Haut Chocolat in Soho and choclate-dipped bacon from Roni-Sue in the East Village.
