Bacon Searches

According to Trend de la Creme, “bacon recipes” was a more popular internet search on Yahoo than the recent death of Ted Kennedy. Bacon comes in just below searches for Michael Jackson whose birthday was celebrated this past weekend. Bacon is rather important in my life but, wow—seriously? I am just as surprised as Trend de la Creme (thanks to Michelle for sending me the interesting blog) who says: “we are all going to hell in a hand basket. A really, really big hand basket. Lined with ham... and gravy... and fried chicken... and Lipitor.” Yes, well, here’s to Teddy:

iBacon
Seriously? I don’t know about you but I’d rather be actually cooking bacon. Just another useless app for iPhone users to play with instead of participating in real life.

Bacon Burger Dog
Recently, someone contacted me about Wright Brand Bacon. Has anyone ever tried this brand? It’s new to me but I should be getting some samples to try soon—I’ll let you know what I think! In the meantime here is a recipe they provided that looks pretty perfect for summer. Watch the video with Food Network’s Aaron McCargo here.
Bacon Burger-Style Hot Dogserves 4
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon cracked black pepper
2 tablespoons Worchestershire sauce
6 strips uncooked Wright® Brand Smoked Bacon
1/4 cup jalapeño peppers, chopped
1 cup shredded Colby cheese
4 hot dog buns
8 strips uncooked Wright® Brand Smoked Bacon
Grilling Preparation Instructions
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15-20 minutes
1. While grill is preheating, in a medium size bowl mix ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce; set aside.
2. Cook 10 strips of Wright® Brand Smoked Bacon according to package directions. Allow to cool slightly, then coursely chop.
3. In another medium bowl, gently toss the cooked bacon pieces with jalapeños and cheese; set aside.
4. Divide burger meat into quarters and roll each quarter between two pieces of plastic wrap to a 6-inch by 4-inch square.
5. Place 1/4 of the cooked bacon, jalapeño and cheese filling down the middle of each square. Roll and seal meat into hot dog shape.
6. Wrap each burger dog with two strips of uncooked Wright® Brand Smoked Bacon from end to end, securing with a toothpick.
7. Place burger dogs on medium-hot grill and cook approximately 15-20 minutes with lid closed, turning every 2-3 minutes or until cooked.
8. Remove burger dogs from grill, place on hot dog buns and enjoy!

If Only They Came in Bacon...
A comment from their website:
“You guys are soooo close... Make it on bacon and youll be rich!!”
Agreed. Thanks to Rosa for the link!

Flaming Bacon
Smoked meat anyone?
What compels one to decide to create such a random thing? It’s a waste of delicious (& not exactly cheap!) prosciutto if you ask me...

“Is your breadmeat lackluster?”
For only $7.99 you can have your very own bottle of Squeez Bacon! Each bottle contains 16 servings—that’s like 64 slices of bacon! Scary part: a 12 year shelf life, no refrigeration needed. But hey... even bacon is made better with a squirt of Squeez Bacon.

Bacon Sales Sizzle
Even in this rough economy, bacon sales are up 10% according to CBS News. Just goes to show, bacon will never die!
Why the hell aren’t there any bars in New York that do the free bacon thing??

Bad Bacon Habits
I have been given 2 bottles of Bacon Salt which I have yet to try—probably because I am wary of things that taste like bacon but include no actual bacon. Apparently, teenagers (and what appears to be middle-aged, pony-tailed office workers) have found that Bacon Salt goes better up their noses than on their eggs. Snorting the stuff has become a growing trend? J&D have put up a website warning against the appalling habit. Looks like someone’s getting creative with their marketing... Hmm, what kind of scandalous youtube video can I make to hawk skin care products?3/9/09
Bacon Will Never Die
The Slate claims that bacon mania is over. I’m sorry, but when was bacon ever not popular??
True, there has been some over exposure in the media lately but I really don’t care what dirty hipsters have to say about NY Times articles. Bacon is NOT a trend. Bacon is a way of life.

Month of Bacon Update
Here's an update on Mike Nelson’s month long bacon-only diet. He’s actually lost some weight and his blood pressure has gone down! Apparently pork fat is similar to olive oil... really??

More Bacon & Bourbon
As you can see, there is no shortage of bacon and bourbon lovers out there. By far one of the coolest events I’ve been to... ever... in life.
Applewood smoked bacon samples being passed around while Josh Ozersky spoke of the importance of a 50/50 meat to fat ratio in bacon. He compared it to a well balanced meal in which “the fat is the meat and the meat is the vegetables.” Ozersky also recommends Benton’s bacon and his preferred method of cooking bacon is in the oven at 375°.
Scott Smith from RUB shares with us step-by-step his recipe for making BBQ Bacon Chunks—cured, triple smoked and deep fried in lard. Note to self: Eat at RUB very, very soon!
Bacon & Bourbon—a wildly successful pairing. Read more about the event here. And check out video from The Feedbag.

Please Don’t Wait
Last month I went to Please Don’t Tell to try their bacon-infused Benton’s Old Fashioned. I may have mentioned that reservations are hard to come by. A seat at the bar can be over an hour wait (although they will call your cell phone while you hang out in the neighborhood). My suggestion—make your own:

Bacon Cheeseburger Emergency
Some people will go to any lengths to get their bacon cheeseburger done right...
A 911 dispatcher tells an irate fast food customer, "Ma'am, we're not going to go down there and enforce your Western bacon cheeseburger." Someone should have told this crazy woman that you can't get the Western at Burger King.

Chicken Fried Bacon
I'm not ashamed to admit that on occasion (usually a hung-over occasion) I will order a side of bacon... and that's it. If only I lived in Snook, Texas where bacon is not just a side.

Being Baconistic
Pretty funny Miller commercial. But a bit baconist, don't you think ladies? Much like this Wendy's commercial. Why do advertisers always assume bacon love is exclusive to men?? I may not be some fat dude frying things up shirtless—but my desire for bacon is no less enthusiastic.
