Best Bacon Splurge

In an effort to save money, I’ve decided not to drink or eat out as much (hence the lack of bacon ratings) or do any shopping until summer comes around... oh summer, please come quickly!! This has been very difficult—especially when there are $9 chocolate bars and $10 jars of anarchy tempting me. One way to cut spending is to bring my lunch to work as much as possible. I've been eating turkey sandwiches for the better part of the past week. This may seem incredibly boring and a sure way to make me ditch my lunch & run out to one of the 3 places in Irvington to buy a hot meal. But these are no ordinary sandwiches... inside is a thin layer of heaven. That heaven is baconmarmalade. Sure, $9 for a 4 oz. jar would not exactly be considered “saving” but a little goes a long way. And as long as I have baconmarmalade, I could eat sandwiches every single day for the rest of my life. That would certainly be very thrifty! It’s a good investment to make otherwise sad lunches into something to look forward to. Plus it's fun open up a jar with such an incredibly cute logo. You all know cuteness counts in my world (unfortunately resulting in pricey chocolate purchases).

You can find baconmarmalade at the next Greenpoint Food Market on April 10th. Learn more about Ross and Joanna (the awesome chef/designer couple) behind all that deliciousness here.

This is How I Want My Meat Packaged...

as long as it’s from a reputable butcher (as you can’t actually see the meat). A unique packaging concept for local, organic meats by Chris Chapman. Not only super cute but biodegradable as well. That first package, however, should be labeled “bacon” since the cut shown is the belly!

Le Fooding D’Amour

Two of my great loves (aside from bacon of course)—food and design. My favorite posters for this event:

“12 chefs, three misologists, two butchers, one ice-cream maker, two DJs, 15 graphic designers, a select vintner, a fine Champagne, some fromages and a mystery guest, to feast your senses and do some conscious good. Action Against Hunger can’t wait.”

Neither can I.

Sweet Swine Sounds

I am not a tech-savvy person. I don't know a thing about speakers or iPhones (I still have a 1st generation mini). I don’t care to purchase new gadgets until my old ones have completely stop working. There is only one other thing that will drive me to upgrade... cuteness. And this pig speaker with it’s pig tail/cord thingy is unbelievably adorable! Can someone please translate this website so I can order one??

Larder Love

I was instantly smitten when I walked into BKLYN Larder in Flatbush yesterday evening and saw all the dried sausages hanging from a pig-perched rail. I was then overwhelmed by the many tantalizing cheeses displayed before me but the staff was eager to help. I tried two pecorinos as well as a pantaleo. I went with the panteleo as well as a soft cheese I can’t recall the name of. The dude behind the counter was very patient as I was overcome with enthusiasm and forgot my manners. I exclaimed, “We want more!” because there was still the task of choosing from the plentiful pork products. I’ve mentioned before that cuteness counts and the Larder is no exception—as evidenced by their prosperity pig (rather than kitty), shelves full of beautifully packaged provisions, and well-designed signage. And they certainly have the gastronomic goods to back it up.

Cuteness Counts

As a designer, I often judge a book by it’s cover—you'll never see me reading an ugly book (I take the jackets off if they are). I’ll buy a CD if the packaging is really pretty or has a cool diecut. And I root for sports teams based on whose uniform is cuter. But when it comes to food, I tend to care more about taste than typography. However, when a restaurant’s identity is deliciously designed, it makes the experience even better. Perusing through Death by Kearning, I came across Foda Studios’ work on Lambert’s Downtown Barbecue—both in Austin. I’ve not heard anything about Lambert’s but their branding alone makes me crave “fancy barbecue.”
