NYC's Best Sandwiches

Grubstreet has a list of the 101 Best Sandwiches in New York. And no surprise, many of these are pork sandwiches! There are so many in fact that I decided to choose a mere 10 from the list that I would like to try in the next year or so. From the bottom of the list up, here are my picks:

100. The Elvis - Peanut Butter & Co.

83. Ham & Cheese - Char No. 4

56. Bacon & Marmalade - Prune

53. PMB (pancetta, mango & basil) - Sullivan St. Bakery

43. Bacon, Egg & Lettuce - BKLYN Larder

39. Bacon, Egg & Cheese - Prime Meats

26. Country Ham Biscuit - Egg

22. Grilled 3-Cheese with House-smoked Ham - The Breslin

13. Croque Monsieur - Bar Boulud

I think I’ll start with number 53! A lot of these picks are based on me already loving particular restaurants or wanting to try ones I haven’t. There is lots of porky goodness on the list besides these. What are your favorites? Any sandwiches that you think are missing? I think Bierkraft’s Serrano should have been very high on the list. And are ice cream sandwiches not considered? Because Xie Xie’s 1000 Year Old Ice Cream Sandwich would easily top my list!

Nose-to-Tail & Everything In Between

This Sunday at the Astor Center, Ryan Skeen will teach you how to use all the flavorful, cheap cuts of the pig at home. Unfortunately, at $135 the class itself is not cheap. But if you love pork and you cook a lot then it may be worth it! Mr. Skeen, of Irving Mill and Resto fame, will be preparing the following meal:

Hamachi w/ Pork Rind, Morcilla, Grapefruit & Uni
Pork Toast w/ Deviled Eggs & Caviar
Crispy Pigs Ear Salad
Boudin Noir Souffle
Salt & Pepper Pig Tails
Zampone Cotechino w/ Lentils
Trotter Sugo w/ Tuscan Kale, Garganelli & Burrata

The “erstwhile porkestra conductor” can now be found at Allen & Delancey which I have been dying to try simply for their bacon caramel french toast dessert... mmm.

Bacone

Like an ice cream cone but meatier: a bacon cone filled with scrambled eggs and country gravy topped with a biscuit. Thanks DirtyBlonde for the photo!

Bacon Cures Hangovers

In college, the preferred food option (for those dwelling in SVA’s GW dorms) after a night out was MT Deli’s bacon, egg & cheese on a roll. Even to this day I still crave a bacon, egg & cheese—but on a croissant and usually from John’s Bakery—whenever I’ve had a bit too much the night before. But that rarely happens...

Now it has been scientifically proven that bacon cures hang overs! Food in general helps to speed up you metabolism which helps your body deal with the after-affects of boozing it up. But bacon, more specifically, is full of protein which breaks down into amino acids. Getting wasted depletes neurotransmitters but bacon’s high level of aminos tops these up, giving you a clearer head. Research shows that even the simple smell of bacon cooking is a comfort to all of us alcoholics.

The weekend is here. It will be a sunny 83° tomorrow (in NYC)—which means barbecues, picnics, and outdoor cocktails. So drink up! Bacon will be waiting for you Sunday morning (or afternoon...)

Ladies Love the Meat

There’s a misconception that bacon lovers (or meat lovers in general) are all a bunch of male fatties. I chose the name “baconista” specifically because it sounds very feminine. The Daily Beast has a great article that describes the relationship between women and meat.

Still, the old notion that meat is masculine remains internalized for many women. We suffer the tyranny of veggie plates when we’re hankering for something with charbroiled substance.”

I definitely do not suffer from that notion. I may be a mere 5' tall, 92 lb. chick but yes, it’s usually me who will order the steak and eggs AND a side of bacon (so please don’t set it in front of my male dining companion).
